Myths about Medicare

  1. You can only enroll in Medicare during the Open Enrollment Period. This myth is widely believed by many Americans. The fact is, the Open Enrollment Period, or AEP, is only applied to those currently enrolled in Medicare and wanting to apply for Medicare Supplement, which pays for many costs that Medicare doesn’t. If you are a new Medicare enrollee, the period that matters more is the Initial Enrollment Period, which depends on when your birthday falls. This 7-month period begins 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday, includes the month of your birthday, and extends 3 months after your birthday month. For some, a Special Enrollment Period can also serve as a time to enroll in Medicare. It is important to remember that if you want to get Medicare Supplement coverage, you should do so when you first enroll in Part B to avoid late penalty premiums.

  2. Medicare will cover all of my healthcare costs. The truth is, Medicare can leave many gaps in your healthcare coverage. It won’t cover things like dental, vision, or hearing services, long-term care, skilled nursing facilities, certain hospital costs, and more. A Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, is necessary if you want to avoid out-of-pocket healthcare costs, copayments, and deductibles brought about by gaps in Medicare. A Dental, Vision, and Hearing plan, like that of Manhattan Life’s, offers coverage for such services in a package plan. Manhattan’s DVH plan offers guaranteed issue up to age 86 with guaranteed renewability for life. A bundle plan Like this is perfect for those needing coverage for things like hearing aids, glasses, and trips to the dentist.

  3. Medicare is going bankrupt. This is just not true, and Medicare is not going anywhere.

  4. Medicare will be destroyed by the Affordable Care Act. The ACA was not designed to replace Medicare in any way. It actually prohibits cuts to Medicare guaranteed benefits, and is meant to reduce Medicare costs, decrease fraud, and eliminate waste.
